The Nihei's: Our Story

On April 1, 2008, our 4-year-old daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After her biopsy on April 8th it was determined that she had a bithalamic anaplastic astrocytoma with extension into her brain stem.

In the beginning of March we noticed a personality change in Lauren who normally is a very outgoing and happy-go-lucky kid. She became very clingy and shy. She didn't want to talk on the phone anymore, or play on the slide with the other kids at pre-school. By mid-March, Lauren started complaining about headaches. Her pediatrician thought it might be a sinus infection or that she may need glasses. He put her on antibiotics and we made an eye appointment.

A few days later when she started holding her head funny and her headaches returned we insisted on a CT scan. That's when her pediatrician sent us to the ER at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) for a CT scan, and when our world was turned upside down and our nightmare began...

Lauren was up at CHLA yesterday for her weekly-scheduled appointment. No chemo, just labs. Dr. Finlay said her blood counts look good and we are lowering her Prednisone to 5 mg a day vs. 7.5 mg. Anna, the PA, said from here on we're really going to take it slow. We'll probably lower it to 4mg next week.

After her appointment yesterday, the girls headed over to the American Girl Store in Beverly Hills (the only location in Calif.) with their American Girls dolls. The American Girl Store is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of. In the store they have a beauty salon...for the doll, hospital for the dolls, restaurant for the girls and their doll. Matching outfits for the dolls and their owners. And of course, everything is EXPENSIVE! Thankfully granda was there. For some reason, they didn't want me to go. Hmmm, I wonder why? Marissa picked out a $300 RV for granda to buy her doll, which mommy said "no." The girls did come home with two new stuffed animals, breaking our new 2010 rule. No more stuffed animals. When they showed me I yelled, "NO MORE STUFFED ANIMALS!!". But the girls explained that it wasn't for them, it was for their dolls. Oh..., okay. That's different. *sigh* Lauren did tell me the next time she goes, she wants to make an appointment for her doll in the doll beauty salon so that she can change the color to a light brown and make it curly. She got the doll when her hair was straight and black.
