The Nihei's: Our Story

On April 1, 2008, our 4-year-old daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After her biopsy on April 8th it was determined that she had a bithalamic anaplastic astrocytoma with extension into her brain stem.

In the beginning of March we noticed a personality change in Lauren who normally is a very outgoing and happy-go-lucky kid. She became very clingy and shy. She didn't want to talk on the phone anymore, or play on the slide with the other kids at pre-school. By mid-March, Lauren started complaining about headaches. Her pediatrician thought it might be a sinus infection or that she may need glasses. He put her on antibiotics and we made an eye appointment.

A few days later when she started holding her head funny and her headaches returned we insisted on a CT scan. That's when her pediatrician sent us to the ER at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) for a CT scan, and when our world was turned upside down and our nightmare began...

Lauren went up to CHLA today for her bi-monthly chemo. However, her platelets are too low for her to get her chemo. Lauren (and the rest of the family) have been fighting a cold ever since we've returned from our trip to Northern California, so whatever viral infection we got up there, has beat down her immune system. We also have held off (per the doctor's instructions) Lauren's daily chemo of Temodar because of her cold. They have recommended that we hold off her daily chemo for another week. I have to admit we are getting a little nervous about the amount of chemo she hasn't gotten this quarter (she didn't get any during July). So now that we know her platelets and ANC (white blood cells) are low, what do we do about school?? There have been a number of kids sick already. I think two kids in her class have either gone home sick or were kept home with a fever this week.

Other updates:

-- Auntie Sarah (Say-Say) has successfully completed her stem cell harvesting, which entails her to be hooked up to a big machine that draws her blood out in one tube, swirls it around and pumps it back into her. When Lauren had her stem cells harvested, she cried when she saw how big the machine was.

-- Just got word that CHLA will be implementing the same precautionary procedures that CHOC has. Which is no siblings allowed in, due to the swine flu. This is going to cause a huge logistical nightmare, especially with the new baby coming. *sigh*

-- Please continue to pray for Regina and the Tan Family (www.diana78.blogspot.com). With today's modern medicine and science, I can not believe people, especially kids, have to endure this or why they have not come up with a cure for cancer yet? Innocent kids who should have their whole life to look forward too. What have they done to deserve any of this?? I just don't get it.
