Well…Make-A-Wish came by last night. There were two of them, Lilly and Paul. Lilly took Lauren into the living family room to talk while me, Hilary and Paul stayed in the family room. Marissa stayed with Lauren to help her with the questions. Paul went over some forms. We needed to provide our I.D.'s, birth certificates of the girls, credit card info, car insurance, and dates we could go on a trip (if that was the wish). He asked us about her condition and any limitations, or medical requirements. After about an hour, Lauren and Lilly come into the living room. Lilly had asked Lauren three basic questions: 1. If you could meet any one in the world who would you want to meet? (We all know the answer wasn't Tiger Woods.) 2. If you could go any where, where would you want go? 3. If you could have one thing, what would it be? So Lilly says, "Do you want to hear Lauren's top four wishes?" At which point, Lauren runs and jumps on Hilary lap and hides her face. In reverse order, Wish #4: Lauren wants to meet Brooke. What? Who? Your baby sister, Brooke? No, Brooke White from American Idol. That's a surprise. We haven't talked about her in awhile. Wish #3: Lauren wants to go on a Disney Cruise. Wish #2: Lauren wants to be a vet for a day. And her Number One Wish? Hmmm, what would a 5-year wish for? Drum roll please…., Lauren #1 wish in the world is……. She wants a guinea pig. *sigh* A guinea pig? Then Lilly put us on the spot. Would you guys have a problem with a guinea pig? Problem with a small squeaky and shaky animal that you can't tell its head from its tail? We asked Lauren later why she wants a guinea pig? She said she want to carry it around in her purse. If we knew Lauren's #1 wish in the world was to have a guinea pig, she'd have 100 already. An image of Lauren at 12 years old looking at a picture of herself holding a guinea pig, asking that was my one wish? We left it at. We'll let Lauren think about it for a few days and then let Make-A-Wish know if Lauren wants to make any changes. Aiya!
The Nihei's: Our Story
On April 1, 2008, our 4-year-old daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After her biopsy on April 8th it was determined that she had a bithalamic anaplastic astrocytoma with extension into her brain stem.
In the beginning of March we noticed a personality change in Lauren who normally is a very outgoing and happy-go-lucky kid. She became very clingy and shy. She didn't want to talk on the phone anymore, or play on the slide with the other kids at pre-school. By mid-March, Lauren started complaining about headaches. Her pediatrician thought it might be a sinus infection or that she may need glasses. He put her on antibiotics and we made an eye appointment.
A few days later when she started holding her head funny and her headaches returned we insisted on a CT scan. That's when her pediatrician sent us to the ER at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) for a CT scan, and when our world was turned upside down and our nightmare began...
