Lauren continues to do well. She had a dentist appointment yesterday. No cavities! Also, she has a couple of loose teeth. Speaking of Lauren's teeth, the other day Lauren was complaining her teeth hurt. She opened her mouth and showed me where. When I looked at her lower back teeth on each side, I could see a big flap of gum that had almost grown over the entire teeth on each side (or is it tooth on each side?). My first thought it was some horrible side effect of all the chemo she has taken. I figured they'd need to do some type of gum surgery. I also was thinking it's because we don't floss enough back there. The only thing that kept me from panicking was that it was symmetrical, it was happening to both sides of her mouth. I emailed one of my old friends who's a dentist in NorCal and described to him what was happening and if I needed to be concerned. It took him two seconds to conclude that the gum wasn't growing over the teeth, it was Lauren teeth erupting through her gum. He had me count the number of lower teeth she had, she had 12. it was her 6 year molars coming in!! I panic easily now a days. Besides, in my defense, why would I assume they were her 6 year molars since she is only 5 years old.
Lauren's question of the day: Who gives policemen tickets when they drive too fast?
Lauren's Auntie Say-Say is scheduled to have a 2nd brain surgery on March 18, to remove leftover tumor from her first surgery (back in August '08). This time she'll be having the surgery at UCSF. Auntie Say, we are thinking, praying and will be there for you.
Make-A-Wish is scheduled to meet with Lauren on Monday. Time to make her watch my Tiger Woods highlights DVD.
The Nihei's: Our Story
On April 1, 2008, our 4-year-old daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After her biopsy on April 8th it was determined that she had a bithalamic anaplastic astrocytoma with extension into her brain stem.
In the beginning of March we noticed a personality change in Lauren who normally is a very outgoing and happy-go-lucky kid. She became very clingy and shy. She didn't want to talk on the phone anymore, or play on the slide with the other kids at pre-school. By mid-March, Lauren started complaining about headaches. Her pediatrician thought it might be a sinus infection or that she may need glasses. He put her on antibiotics and we made an eye appointment.
A few days later when she started holding her head funny and her headaches returned we insisted on a CT scan. That's when her pediatrician sent us to the ER at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) for a CT scan, and when our world was turned upside down and our nightmare began...
