The Nihei's: Our Story

On April 1, 2008, our 4-year-old daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After her biopsy on April 8th it was determined that she had a bithalamic anaplastic astrocytoma with extension into her brain stem.

In the beginning of March we noticed a personality change in Lauren who normally is a very outgoing and happy-go-lucky kid. She became very clingy and shy. She didn't want to talk on the phone anymore, or play on the slide with the other kids at pre-school. By mid-March, Lauren started complaining about headaches. Her pediatrician thought it might be a sinus infection or that she may need glasses. He put her on antibiotics and we made an eye appointment.

A few days later when she started holding her head funny and her headaches returned we insisted on a CT scan. That's when her pediatrician sent us to the ER at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) for a CT scan, and when our world was turned upside down and our nightmare began...

We've got mold. Our house is quarantined. We have the dreaded black mold spores (black mold is what killed the archeologists that went into King Tut's tomb, that made people think there was a curse) floating everywhere in our master bedroom and bathroom. The guy said the concentration is so high that we shouldn't even go in there. Also, we have this rare mold called Torula. The biologist was surprised to see it in a house since it is almost always found outside. Of course, the way our year is going, I'm not surprised at all. He thinks that the Torula mold got on the board when they built the house, and has been laying dormant all these years, until it was activated from the bathtub water. They were going to check the rest of the house, but he was pretty sure that the mold spores are everywhere. I told them what's the point in paying for the testing, if you're going to tell us it needs to be cleaned? So the plan is, the master bedroom and bath will be sealed off and they will tear out the bathroom floors and scrub everything from the walls, to the shoes, and even the air. They'll be running these special air filter machines for at least 48 hours. They will also be going to take all of our clothes and put them in plastic bags, clean the bags then take them to the garage until we can wash or have them dry cleaned. The thought of strangers going through all our personal belongings bothers me. What an invasion of privacy. Then they run the air scrubbers/filters in the rest of house while me and Hil scrub the walls, furniture and vacuum the carpet.

Last night, the kids and mom stayed at the grandparents, while I stayed at the house. What a mistake that was, since I couldn't sleep at all. With every breath I took, I could feel my lungs filling with mold spores. Obviously, it's extremely dangerous for Lauren to be in our house right now, so we'll be staying at the grandparent's house for a few weeks. I should probably have checked with them first before posting this. But oh well, here we come.
