The Nihei's: Our Story

On April 1, 2008, our 4-year-old daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After her biopsy on April 8th it was determined that she had a bithalamic anaplastic astrocytoma with extension into her brain stem.

In the beginning of March we noticed a personality change in Lauren who normally is a very outgoing and happy-go-lucky kid. She became very clingy and shy. She didn't want to talk on the phone anymore, or play on the slide with the other kids at pre-school. By mid-March, Lauren started complaining about headaches. Her pediatrician thought it might be a sinus infection or that she may need glasses. He put her on antibiotics and we made an eye appointment.

A few days later when she started holding her head funny and her headaches returned we insisted on a CT scan. That's when her pediatrician sent us to the ER at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) for a CT scan, and when our world was turned upside down and our nightmare began...

Lauren is home!! Well, at granny's. Very looong day yesterday. Even though everybody knew she needed platelets, they didn't start pre-medicating her until 5:30 pm, meaning she wouldn't get the platelets until after 6 and we wouldn't get out of the hospital until after 7 at the earliest. Turns out that estimate was way off. After the paperwork was done, Lauren didn't get discharged from the hospital until almost 9:30 pm and she didn't get to granny's until 11 pm. That was a little frustrating. But other than that, it's so nice to be out of the hospital.

Also, we didn't check out of the Ronald McDonald's House until after 7, meaning another family couldn't get the room until then. Since we weren't sure if Lauren was going to be discharged, we requested another night stay. And unlike a regular hotel, the RMH doesn't have cleaning people, the guests are the maids. So we had to wash all the sheets and towels, mop and vacuum the floors and scrub the bathtub. Which we have absolutely no problem doing, it just takes time and can be tough timing wise when Lauren is in the hospital. Also, we learned after our first stay there, that the most time-consuming part of cleaning is waiting for the washer and dryer. So I went home and brought back some sheets and towels, so we washed their sheets and towels on Sunday, which saved us at least two hours. Next time we'll change the sheets on day one and not even use theirs. So we're slowing learning.

We go back on Wed. to meet with Dr. Finlay.
