Lauren has an appointment today to meet with Dr. Finlay to check on her past chemo treatment and to go over her next and final chemo treatment. We'll also discuss her headaches and her next MRI on Nov. 11th. Coincidently, she hasn't had any in the past 10 days (while at the hospital), but did have one yesterday (at granny's house). Also this morning she woke up with a rash all over her body. Poor kid. We're thinking the rash and headaches must be an allergic reaction to something and not related to her tumor. We hope.
While in the hospital Lauren realized that we had forgotten to celebrate Belle's (the beagle) 1st birthday. It was on Oct. 12 (I think). So yesterday we had a surprise b-day party for Belle. Lauren went to Target and bought Belle a card, toys and a new collar with diamonds! She then had to sneak everything into the house so that Belle wouldn't see them. She made a huge cake (made of both wet and dry dog food, as well as cat food, since Belle loves to eat the cat food and of course dog biscuits on top), it weighed more than the dog. We lit a candle and sang "happy birthday to Belle." Of course, for my bday in August I didn’t even receive a card or anything, but I'm not bitter. We also celebrated Marissa's birthday who turned 3yesterday. Of course, unless we go Disneyland, she'll still be 2 (since
kids 2 and under get in free), unless she has a growth spurt. I'm
kidding...that wouldn't be a good example. We'll just have to leave her
at home when we do go.
The Nihei's: Our Story
On April 1, 2008, our 4-year-old daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After her biopsy on April 8th it was determined that she had a bithalamic anaplastic astrocytoma with extension into her brain stem.
In the beginning of March we noticed a personality change in Lauren who normally is a very outgoing and happy-go-lucky kid. She became very clingy and shy. She didn't want to talk on the phone anymore, or play on the slide with the other kids at pre-school. By mid-March, Lauren started complaining about headaches. Her pediatrician thought it might be a sinus infection or that she may need glasses. He put her on antibiotics and we made an eye appointment.
A few days later when she started holding her head funny and her headaches returned we insisted on a CT scan. That's when her pediatrician sent us to the ER at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) for a CT scan, and when our world was turned upside down and our nightmare began...
