Day 8 of chemo. Lauren's body appears to be handling the chemo well, so far. She'll begin taking the chemo Temador tonight along with the chemo Etoposide. Lauren will also be going to the hospital to have her blood count checked. This is good timing since she continues to complain about headaches. She woke up at 3:30 a.m. this morning complaining her head hurts and she was tossing and turning all night. She is usually a pretty sound sleeper. While we're very concerned, the only reason that we're not totally freaking out is that she had a CT scan on Monday which revealed that the tumor was stable and there was no build up of fluid or swelling, AND…, we see no deterioration in Lauren's motor skills. Her speech and her hands/leg movements appear normal, other than the normal shaking in her left hand. She did tell me last night that she can now see out of her left eye! In my most calm and positive voice I said, "oh good. Were not able to see out of your left eye before?" she said, "yeah". In my mind I was thinking, "WHAT?! She never mention that before". But I know she could see out of it before, since we've been putting a patch on her good eye to make her left eye stronger. Hopefully this means it's already helping.
The Nihei's: Our Story
On April 1, 2008, our 4-year-old daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After her biopsy on April 8th it was determined that she had a bithalamic anaplastic astrocytoma with extension into her brain stem.
In the beginning of March we noticed a personality change in Lauren who normally is a very outgoing and happy-go-lucky kid. She became very clingy and shy. She didn't want to talk on the phone anymore, or play on the slide with the other kids at pre-school. By mid-March, Lauren started complaining about headaches. Her pediatrician thought it might be a sinus infection or that she may need glasses. He put her on antibiotics and we made an eye appointment.
A few days later when she started holding her head funny and her headaches returned we insisted on a CT scan. That's when her pediatrician sent us to the ER at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) for a CT scan, and when our world was turned upside down and our nightmare began...
