The Nihei's: Our Story

On April 1, 2008, our 4-year-old daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After her biopsy on April 8th it was determined that she had a bithalamic anaplastic astrocytoma with extension into her brain stem.

In the beginning of March we noticed a personality change in Lauren who normally is a very outgoing and happy-go-lucky kid. She became very clingy and shy. She didn't want to talk on the phone anymore, or play on the slide with the other kids at pre-school. By mid-March, Lauren started complaining about headaches. Her pediatrician thought it might be a sinus infection or that she may need glasses. He put her on antibiotics and we made an eye appointment.

A few days later when she started holding her head funny and her headaches returned we insisted on a CT scan. That's when her pediatrician sent us to the ER at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) for a CT scan, and when our world was turned upside down and our nightmare began...

Lauren is up at CHLA today for her bi-weekly blood test. We've started her GCSF shots on Saturday, hopefully this will help her blood count to go up. This way she'll have more time to have fun before she starts chemo again.

The last few days have been a lot of fun. While she is still a little puffy, she is beginning to look like her old self again, which is nice. And now that she lost 5 lbs, which is half the weight that she gained while on the steroids, she has a lot more energy to run and jump around. She has also been doing a lot of laughing and giggling, just acting like a silly 4-year-old. She has also been laughing and giggling a lot in her dreams, too. To me, this means she is at peace and good things must be going on inside her head. The other night she woke me up (yes, the kids still sleeps with us) when she was giggling in her sleep, while it was 3 am, I couldn't help but smile and be comforted.

Yesterday Lauren met a new friend while at Mc Donalds. A 4-year-old girl with dark and very curly hair came up to Lauren and said she liked her hair, Lauren said, "I like your hair, too." At the time Lauren was kinda shy, but later was very excited she met a new friend. Lauren told Hil that we should put it in her blog that she met a new friend, so here it is.
