The Nihei's: Our Story

On April 1, 2008, our 4-year-old daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After her biopsy on April 8th it was determined that she had a bithalamic anaplastic astrocytoma with extension into her brain stem.

In the beginning of March we noticed a personality change in Lauren who normally is a very outgoing and happy-go-lucky kid. She became very clingy and shy. She didn't want to talk on the phone anymore, or play on the slide with the other kids at pre-school. By mid-March, Lauren started complaining about headaches. Her pediatrician thought it might be a sinus infection or that she may need glasses. He put her on antibiotics and we made an eye appointment.

A few days later when she started holding her head funny and her headaches returned we insisted on a CT scan. That's when her pediatrician sent us to the ER at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) for a CT scan, and when our world was turned upside down and our nightmare began...

My leg still hurts from receiving the practice shot from Hilary. No sign of infection, will continue to monitor.

Hilary gave Lauren a shot for the first time last night. To make sure it didn't hurt, we put numbing cream on the site for an hour, but before you give the shot you have to clean the area. So of course, after Hil cleaned the area we couldn't tell exactly where the cream had been, we guessed wrong and Lauren cried. We're idiots. In the future, we're going to draw a circle and put the cream in the circle. We're learning.

No steroid rage episode since we've been home (knock on wood). We're thinking the episode only come when Lauren is super tired. Another side effect I forgot to mention is an increase appetite. Lauren can't seem to get enough food. We call her our little eating machine - strawberries, ice cream, spaghettio's, soup, and that's just an appetizer before dinner. We figure it couldn't hurt to beef her up now before she begins to lose her appetite when the heavy-duty chemo starts. Her face has gotten a lot more round and she has a good size pot belly. I told Hilary that Lauren is looking more and more like her everyday (for those of you that don't know, Hil is pregnant).

Lauren has an appointment today at the cancer clinic to check her blood level to make sure her white blood count is not too low.
