Due to the infection in Lauren's lungs she had an bronchoscopy done yesterday where the doctors inserted a probe with a tiny camera and a suction cup on the end of it. They said they saw lots of mucus in the area where the air passage splits off. They squirted water in her lungs and then sucked it up, to see what grows. They got a lot of gunk out her lungs, so her lungs sounded much better and cleaner. They said they didn't see anything unusual, and it wasn't as bad as some lungs they have seen. There was no bleeding but a lot of inflammation and irritation. Once the results of the cultures come back, we'll have a better idea what she is dealing with. Lauren was also spiking a fever when I left so they added another antibiotic to her mix of other antibiotic and anti-fungal medicines.
We have no idea when we'll be coming home. We were very fortunate that Dr. Dhall was concerned enough to order a CT scan on Lauren's chest, otherwise we wouldn't have caught this infection until it was really bad.
The Nihei's: Our Story
On April 1, 2008, our 4-year-old daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After her biopsy on April 8th it was determined that she had a bithalamic anaplastic astrocytoma with extension into her brain stem.
In the beginning of March we noticed a personality change in Lauren who normally is a very outgoing and happy-go-lucky kid. She became very clingy and shy. She didn't want to talk on the phone anymore, or play on the slide with the other kids at pre-school. By mid-March, Lauren started complaining about headaches. Her pediatrician thought it might be a sinus infection or that she may need glasses. He put her on antibiotics and we made an eye appointment.
A few days later when she started holding her head funny and her headaches returned we insisted on a CT scan. That's when her pediatrician sent us to the ER at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) for a CT scan, and when our world was turned upside down and our nightmare began...
