Big day tomorrow and I'm not talking about it being St. Patrick's day, not that the Fitzsimmons need an excuse to drink beer. I'm talking about Lauren's first MRI since receiving the bad news in January that her tumor appears to be coming back to life. This will give us an indication that her new chemo protocol is working. Are we nervous? Yes. Are we anxious? Extremely. Are we hopeful? We are trying to be.
After breaking her silence with a song last week, Lauren hasn't shown much improvement. She is still not really talking and is more grumpy than anything. And then last night, she saw a Target bag on the kitchen table. She said she wanted to wear her Princess and the Frog pajamas. Hilary said, you don't have any Princess and the Frog pajamas. She said, "yes I do. Granny bought them for me today." Hilary broke down trying to explain to her that she was at CHLA all day.
I just don't know. We're trying to remain positive and not give up "hope," but it's hard. I'm just hoping, with Lauren's Irish blood, we'll get some extra Irish luck with it being St. Patrick's day and all. As many of you know, via Facebook, we picked up our camper-trailer on Saturday. On the way home with it, after a 2-hour orientation, we decided, let's go camping. What are we waiting for? So after a couple of calls to a couple of camp sites, we found one with availability. So after a quick stop at home to over pack (of course) off we went to Rancho Jurupa in Riverside. Only 30 minutes or so away. It's a very nice camp site with a fishing pond, jungle gyms, water park and a pee-wee golf course. Perfect place to get used to the camper. Marissa had a blast, while Lauren said she had fun, but stayed inside most of the time, since it was pretty cold. Baby Finlay just drooled all over the place. This Friday we're heading to Bolsa Chica State Beach for a night. Just heard that the grunions might be running. How cool would that be if they do. http://www.dfg.ca.gov/marine/grunion.asp
The Nihei's: Our Story
On April 1, 2008, our 4-year-old daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After her biopsy on April 8th it was determined that she had a bithalamic anaplastic astrocytoma with extension into her brain stem.
In the beginning of March we noticed a personality change in Lauren who normally is a very outgoing and happy-go-lucky kid. She became very clingy and shy. She didn't want to talk on the phone anymore, or play on the slide with the other kids at pre-school. By mid-March, Lauren started complaining about headaches. Her pediatrician thought it might be a sinus infection or that she may need glasses. He put her on antibiotics and we made an eye appointment.
A few days later when she started holding her head funny and her headaches returned we insisted on a CT scan. That's when her pediatrician sent us to the ER at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) for a CT scan, and when our world was turned upside down and our nightmare began...
