I'm posting from iPhone so this will be quick. It's too hard typing with one finger. I'll do a full update when I get in front if a computer. Those of you that are on facebook already know a lot of what is happening. Feel free to add me as a friend.
We're still at CHLA, there are a lot of issues going on right now with Lauren. On Thursday Lauren's eyes were stuck looking left, so we headed to the hospital in a panic, where she under went a CT. To our relief the CT indicated the tumor appeared stable. To make a very long story short these are her issues: 1. spot on her tumor indicating possibly bleeding or calcium. 2. High blood pressure. 3. Enlarge ventricles. 4. Bacterial infection. 5. Viral infection. 6. Hard time looking right. 7. Hard time looking up. 8. Autistic like behavior.
We have three teams looking at her: neuro-oncology, neurology, and opthamology. Recommendation: Either MRI, another CT or both. May have to replace port and shunt. Neuro thinks tumor has change causing her eye issues. Ct will determine if the spot is blood and if it still bleeding. It will check to see if ventricles are continuing to enlarge. That's it for now. Sorry for the poorly written post but I'm too tired and it's too hard to type with one finger on a 2 inch screen. Please pray for Lauren. We're very worried.
The Nihei's: Our Story
On April 1, 2008, our 4-year-old daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After her biopsy on April 8th it was determined that she had a bithalamic anaplastic astrocytoma with extension into her brain stem.
In the beginning of March we noticed a personality change in Lauren who normally is a very outgoing and happy-go-lucky kid. She became very clingy and shy. She didn't want to talk on the phone anymore, or play on the slide with the other kids at pre-school. By mid-March, Lauren started complaining about headaches. Her pediatrician thought it might be a sinus infection or that she may need glasses. He put her on antibiotics and we made an eye appointment.
A few days later when she started holding her head funny and her headaches returned we insisted on a CT scan. That's when her pediatrician sent us to the ER at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) for a CT scan, and when our world was turned upside down and our nightmare began...
