The Nihei's: Our Story

On April 1, 2008, our 4-year-old daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After her biopsy on April 8th it was determined that she had a bithalamic anaplastic astrocytoma with extension into her brain stem.

In the beginning of March we noticed a personality change in Lauren who normally is a very outgoing and happy-go-lucky kid. She became very clingy and shy. She didn't want to talk on the phone anymore, or play on the slide with the other kids at pre-school. By mid-March, Lauren started complaining about headaches. Her pediatrician thought it might be a sinus infection or that she may need glasses. He put her on antibiotics and we made an eye appointment.

A few days later when she started holding her head funny and her headaches returned we insisted on a CT scan. That's when her pediatrician sent us to the ER at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) for a CT scan, and when our world was turned upside down and our nightmare began...

Last night the family was home in the house together for the first time in over a month. The girls tore up the place playing with every stuffed animal as if they hadn't seem them before. The place was a total disaster zone, which was real nice sight to see. To see and hear the girls play and laugh together is just so awesome. It was also nice that Hilary was finally able to get a bath, which she hadn't done in over a month. Perfume and deodorant can only hide so much.

As unfair as it sounds and as if the stress from the past month wasn't enough, tomorrow we're off to CHLA for Lauren's quarterly MRI and also her bi-weekly chemo treatment. There is nothing more stressful than the wait during Lauren's MRI. So many bad thoughts run through your head. All the "what ifs….". I can't stand it. Also, they use the stuff Michael Jackson used to put Lauren under. There is always a risk when you're put under. Personally, I think Lauren would be okay to lie still for an hour. Also while it seem unfair that after spending over a month in the hospital that she has to go back two days later to get chemo, we'll feel much better just knowing the latest results, since she has been off chemo for over a month now. We don't want to give that tumor any opportunity to wake up. We need to keep pounding away at it until it's good and dead.
