The Nihei's: Our Story

On April 1, 2008, our 4-year-old daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After her biopsy on April 8th it was determined that she had a bithalamic anaplastic astrocytoma with extension into her brain stem.

In the beginning of March we noticed a personality change in Lauren who normally is a very outgoing and happy-go-lucky kid. She became very clingy and shy. She didn't want to talk on the phone anymore, or play on the slide with the other kids at pre-school. By mid-March, Lauren started complaining about headaches. Her pediatrician thought it might be a sinus infection or that she may need glasses. He put her on antibiotics and we made an eye appointment.

A few days later when she started holding her head funny and her headaches returned we insisted on a CT scan. That's when her pediatrician sent us to the ER at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) for a CT scan, and when our world was turned upside down and our nightmare began...

Big night. Tonight Lauren graduates from preschool. She'll walk across the stage in her cap and gown to accept her diploma. While it might not carry the same academic prestige of a diploma from Harvard, or California State University of Long Beach (my alma mater), considering her chances of even finishing preschool at this same time last year -- it's as big accomplishment, at least in my book. And while it's an accomplishment, it is sad and scary that she'll be leaving the safety of Olive Branch and moving onto kindergarten and entering the public school system. Gulp! I'm envisioning bigger classes and meaner kids. But I'm only basing it on my vague memories of elementary school. As I've mentioned before, due to the steroids that she's on, which make her face, head, and body puffy and swollen, and knowing how mean some kids can be, it's scary thinking how kids will treat her in a new school and how she'll deal with it, especially since she will be mixed in with older children. Too bad we didn't live closer to her older cousins, AJ and Matt, or her friend Tyler, I'd hire them to protect her. But I was talking with Lauren the other night, and I was saying to her, "Graduating from preschool. Wow. Isn't that amazing?" Lauren's reply? "Why is that amazing? I'm ready to move on." So there ya go. Her journey continues.
