The Nihei's: Our Story

On April 1, 2008, our 4-year-old daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After her biopsy on April 8th it was determined that she had a bithalamic anaplastic astrocytoma with extension into her brain stem.

In the beginning of March we noticed a personality change in Lauren who normally is a very outgoing and happy-go-lucky kid. She became very clingy and shy. She didn't want to talk on the phone anymore, or play on the slide with the other kids at pre-school. By mid-March, Lauren started complaining about headaches. Her pediatrician thought it might be a sinus infection or that she may need glasses. He put her on antibiotics and we made an eye appointment.

A few days later when she started holding her head funny and her headaches returned we insisted on a CT scan. That's when her pediatrician sent us to the ER at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) for a CT scan, and when our world was turned upside down and our nightmare began...

Long night. Lauren was tossing and turning all night, complaining that she couldn't sleep (yes, she still sleeps in our room). She kept saying, "I can't sleep. I can't stop thinking about Charlie." Who is Charlie? Well, a week ago, my boss found a stray Shepard mix puppy and was looking for a home for it. Well I thought maybe granny and granda might want him since their dog, Parker is so old and fat, it's more like a living rug. Every time I see Parker, he is sleeping in the middle of the floor. While granda said, no way. Granny told Lauren, don't worry, we'll work on granda. So they decided to name the puppy, Charlie. But unfortunately my boss found a home for Charlie, before I could tell her we'll take it. Of course, Lauren was heart broken. I asked, how about a guinea pig instead, but she didn't think that was funny. So we spent all last week going to different animal shelters' websites looking for a nice puppy. But most of the dogs at shelters are either Pit Bulls or Chihuahuas, which seems a bit strange. Pit Bulls I can understand, but Chihuahuas? I guess it's the Paris Hilton effect, people thinking it would be cool to walk around with a dog in their purse. So yesterday, while mommy went to her doctor's appointment, Granny and Granda took the girls to the mall that had a pet shop. They were just going to look ...right. But underestimating children's natural selling abilities, or over-estimating his ability to say "no" to his only grand kids, Granda had no chance. So needless to say, Granda bought them Charlie. A cute and fuzzy Golden Retriever puppy. However, since he just arrived, Charlie still needed his shots, so they couldn't take him home yesterday, they have to go back and get him today. So when I left for work at 6:15 this morning, Lauren was wide awake, watching TV. Poor mommy, she is not going to be able to sleep until her normal wake-up time of 10 am today.
