Awesome weekend. On Saturday we went to a Clipper game. It was the girls' first professional sporting event. A friend of mine was able to get us tickets and arrange to have the Clipper Spirits come over and say "hi" to the girls (Thanks Ron!). So we got to Staples Center an hour and a half early. Ron took us down courtside where we got to sit and watch the basketball players warm up, and the Clipper Spirits practice their routine at half court. Afterwards they (Spirits) all came over to us. It was a little overwhelming, being surrounded by 12 smiling pretty girls. My pulse quickened, and I could feel sweat forming on my forehead, and I did a lot of "uh, uh." Hilary finally had to dragged me aside so that they could say hi to Lauren and Marissa. Hey, I've still got it (charm). Good thing Hilary was there to keep me in line. The girls on the other hand were totally at ease, just soaking in the attention. The Spirits gave Lauren an autographed poster, which I am going to hang in my office, and they took pictures with the girls. After they left, Lauren told me that she wished she wore her cheeringleading outfit to the game. She also said she couldn't wait to get home to put it on and try her cheerleading moves. After the Spirits left, we moved over to the VIP autograph section where the girls got Steve Novak, Zak Randolph, and Baron Davis' autograph. Steve and Zak were nice enough to stop and take a picture with the girls.
Surprisingly, the girls were totally into the game, at least the first quarter. They were clapping and cheering every time the Clippers scored. They loved the music and lights, and all the excitement. By half time they were pretty much done though. Lauren wanted to go to the gift shop to see if she could get a cheerleading outfit, which thankfully they didn't have (if they charge $12 for a 12 oz. of beer, I can only imagine how much they'd charge for a cheerleading outfit). I was able to talk Lauren into getting a mini-basketball. She didn't like the Clipper ball since it wasn't very pretty (it was black), but she did like the Lakers ball, which was purple. Marissa picked the Clipper ball, which was much better since I don't really want a Lakers ball in my house AND it was 1/2 the cost of the Lakers ball AND it came with a 30% discount.
On Sunday, since the weather was so nice (my car read 94 degrees) we decided to go to the beach, which was a great idea since it wasn't too crowded and the girls had a blast. It was nice to see Lauren running from the waves. Also we weren't as nervous of her falling since the sand would cushion the fall. We could also see dolphins swimming past us. Being at that beach, Corona Del Mar, was bittersweet. The last time we were there, was the weekend before Lauren was first diagnosis.
Other stuff:
- We continue to lower Lauren's steroids. While she still is on .5 mg of Decadron, she is now on 7.5 mg of hydrocort a day down from 15 mg a day.
- Still no word from Make-A-Wish since they canceled on us a couple of weeks ago.
- Since we never heard back from the PT Dept. At CHOC, they were supposed to be getting authorization from my health insurance for Lauren's physical therapy. Hilary finally called to get an update. They let it slip that the person never wrote up the report for the authorization. So now we have to wait another two weeks.
The Nihei's: Our Story
On April 1, 2008, our 4-year-old daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After her biopsy on April 8th it was determined that she had a bithalamic anaplastic astrocytoma with extension into her brain stem.
In the beginning of March we noticed a personality change in Lauren who normally is a very outgoing and happy-go-lucky kid. She became very clingy and shy. She didn't want to talk on the phone anymore, or play on the slide with the other kids at pre-school. By mid-March, Lauren started complaining about headaches. Her pediatrician thought it might be a sinus infection or that she may need glasses. He put her on antibiotics and we made an eye appointment.
A few days later when she started holding her head funny and her headaches returned we insisted on a CT scan. That's when her pediatrician sent us to the ER at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) for a CT scan, and when our world was turned upside down and our nightmare began...
