Long day at the hospital. Lauren had another MRI yesterday. Because Lauren has been complaining of headaches recently and her speech has been slurred, Dr. Finlay didn't want to wait until her next scheduled MRI, which was in April. While I can never imagine a day when these MRI will become routine, yesterday's MRI was particularly nerve racking due to what has happened to two of our friends recently. We weren't sure if we'd get the result of the MRI yesterday since we heard Dr. Finlay was leaving town in the afternoon. Thankfully Joyce (who replaced Anna while she is on maternity leave), got a radiologist to read the MRI for us. He indicated that the tumor was stable, and that it was unchanged. So it appears her headaches and slurred speech was the result of us fiddling with her steroids. We were pretty confident this was the cause of her headaches, but you never know. What a relief. The only drama yesterday was trying to get Lauren's earrings back in, since she got her ears pierced on Monday and she couldn't wear them into the MRI. Hilary couldn't get them in and was hurting Lauren, but she was able to put them in backwards. So now Lauren has just the backing showing. We'll trying again today.
The Nihei's: Our Story
On April 1, 2008, our 4-year-old daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After her biopsy on April 8th it was determined that she had a bithalamic anaplastic astrocytoma with extension into her brain stem.
In the beginning of March we noticed a personality change in Lauren who normally is a very outgoing and happy-go-lucky kid. She became very clingy and shy. She didn't want to talk on the phone anymore, or play on the slide with the other kids at pre-school. By mid-March, Lauren started complaining about headaches. Her pediatrician thought it might be a sinus infection or that she may need glasses. He put her on antibiotics and we made an eye appointment.
A few days later when she started holding her head funny and her headaches returned we insisted on a CT scan. That's when her pediatrician sent us to the ER at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) for a CT scan, and when our world was turned upside down and our nightmare began...
