Monday:
The test results from her blood revealed that she had para-influenza 2, which is a flu like virus. A person with a normal immune system would just have cold like symptoms, for someone like Lauren with a weak immune system, it can be very serious. The doctors yesterday we very concerned. You can tell by they way they moved, they are had a urgency to their steps. They were very concerned with Lauren blood pressure. So they continued to pump Lauren with IV fluid and she also got a blood transfusion all in hopes of increasing her blood pressure. The doctor did say one of the risks of pumping her with fluids is that the fluids don't stay where its suppose to stay and start seeping out of the blood vessels into other parts like her lungs, eyelids, and cheeks. So she was very puffy and is borderline pneumonia. Last night she was pretty delirious, we had to sit her up to get her to take some medicine and she kept saying, "Marissa, Marissa let go". They also removed the ice blanket because it wasn't really working, and it was just making Lauren shiver and shake uncontrollably.
This morning she is a lot better. The doctors have told us she is not quite over the hump, but the top is in sight. Her blood pressure is up, her heart rate is closer to 100 than to 200, and she now has a low grade fever. She also starting coughing this morning and threw-up a huge bowl full of phlem. We I tried dump the drain, it plopped out like a bowl jello. Disgusting, but her breathing is a lot better. She still hasn't really communicated with us since Saturday morning though. That is a little disconcerting. They'll most like will keep her in the ICU for another couple of days.
The Nihei's: Our Story
On April 1, 2008, our 4-year-old daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After her biopsy on April 8th it was determined that she had a bithalamic anaplastic astrocytoma with extension into her brain stem.
In the beginning of March we noticed a personality change in Lauren who normally is a very outgoing and happy-go-lucky kid. She became very clingy and shy. She didn't want to talk on the phone anymore, or play on the slide with the other kids at pre-school. By mid-March, Lauren started complaining about headaches. Her pediatrician thought it might be a sinus infection or that she may need glasses. He put her on antibiotics and we made an eye appointment.
A few days later when she started holding her head funny and her headaches returned we insisted on a CT scan. That's when her pediatrician sent us to the ER at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) for a CT scan, and when our world was turned upside down and our nightmare began...
