The Nihei's: Our Story

On April 1, 2008, our 4-year-old daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After her biopsy on April 8th it was determined that she had a bithalamic anaplastic astrocytoma with extension into her brain stem.

In the beginning of March we noticed a personality change in Lauren who normally is a very outgoing and happy-go-lucky kid. She became very clingy and shy. She didn't want to talk on the phone anymore, or play on the slide with the other kids at pre-school. By mid-March, Lauren started complaining about headaches. Her pediatrician thought it might be a sinus infection or that she may need glasses. He put her on antibiotics and we made an eye appointment.

A few days later when she started holding her head funny and her headaches returned we insisted on a CT scan. That's when her pediatrician sent us to the ER at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) for a CT scan, and when our world was turned upside down and our nightmare began...

Special Thanks

We want to give a special "Thank You" to everyone at Olive Branch. All of the teachers, parents, students, Pastors, and office staff that have supported Lauren and our family through this most difficult time of our lives. We can not express our appreciation for all the Prayers, donations, and fundraisers that you have done for us. It has really helped us Spiritually, emotionally, and financially. Thank you so much.

Day 6:
Lauren is continuing to do well. She doesn't seem very tired (knock on wood), she hasn't gotten sick (knock on wood) and she continues to be in a good mood (she has her moments though). You wouldn't even know she was on chemo right now. Two more nights of just the chemo Etoposide (also known as VP-16), and on Friday we'll add the 2nd chemo (Temodar) to the mix. Then on Monday (Nov. 24th) and Tuesday, she'll have to go the the hospital to received the chemo Thiotepa ,which is administered through an IV. She'll also have to take the chemo Etoposide and Temodar at home later that night. She should be pretty tired and beaten down by this time.

Everything I said about poor Marissa (how Lauren was not as tolerant of Marissa when she is on chemo) in my last post...I take back. We all did Wii Fit together last night. We figured we all could use the exercise and we hear yoga is good for chemo patients. So while Hil and I were still playing Wii Fit, the girls having gotten both tired and bored (it was also past their bedtime) were sitting on the coach watching us, Marissa started whining that she wanted to be cuddled. Normally, we all cuddle on the coach watching TV until the kids fall asleep, and then carry them up to bed (I know, I know Super Nanny would not approve of this at all, but we don't care, we like the girls near us). Seeing that mommy and daddy were in the warrior position (a yoga move) and preoccupied, Lauren took it upon herself and said, "I'll cuddle Marissa." It was very cute and touching to see the girls fall asleep with Lauren holding and cuddling Marissa.
