Lauren is done with her chemo for cycle 2. One more cycle to go. Yeah!! While Lauren normally does a pretty good job of taking her chemo, it is the following week, when the chemo takes affect (it takes a little while for the chemo to work its way into her system) and when her immune system is knocked down that is our biggest concern. Since the chemo has an accumulative affect, her body will be hit a lot harder than the last time. Hopefully her stem cells, which she will receive back on Friday, will help her recover faster and prevent any infections. We'll be staying at the Ronald McDonald's house starting on Friday after she gets her stem cells back.
This and that:
Her next MRI is scheduled for November 7th, which was moved up from Dec. 3rd due to her headaches.
The mold inspector came by the house last night to look at our mold issue, which I think could be the cause of her headaches. We'll find out the results of the mold testing later today. Hopefully, once the mold is removed, her headaches will go away. Also, out of paranoia (I'm not sure if these things even work), I bought an air purifier last night. If figure it couldn't hurt.
The hospital parking fee haven't gone up yet, which was due to increase from $4 a day to $10 a day starting Oct. 1st. In comparison, CHOC had free parking for its patients. When I inquired about the increase, the parking attendant would only say that the increase has been put on hold until sometime next year. I guess whining does pay off.
Hilary spotted Natalie Portman walking around the hospital yesterday. It figures that Hilary sees her on the day I don't go to the hospital. Oh well, this is probably a good thing. Me getting involved with a movie star is the last thing we need right now.
The Nihei's: Our Story
On April 1, 2008, our 4-year-old daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After her biopsy on April 8th it was determined that she had a bithalamic anaplastic astrocytoma with extension into her brain stem.
In the beginning of March we noticed a personality change in Lauren who normally is a very outgoing and happy-go-lucky kid. She became very clingy and shy. She didn't want to talk on the phone anymore, or play on the slide with the other kids at pre-school. By mid-March, Lauren started complaining about headaches. Her pediatrician thought it might be a sinus infection or that she may need glasses. He put her on antibiotics and we made an eye appointment.
A few days later when she started holding her head funny and her headaches returned we insisted on a CT scan. That's when her pediatrician sent us to the ER at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) for a CT scan, and when our world was turned upside down and our nightmare began...
