Lauren is continuing to do well. No fevers. She woke up in a great mood yesterday, did some dancing around the our room at the Ronald McDonald House, and said more than once, her blood count is going up. She even ate breakfast (she hasn't had much of an appetite lately), which was good to see. After breakfast, everybody walked to the hospital, which is within walking distance from the Ronald McDonald's House (we were advised not to walk around the area after dark). Her labs showed her blood counts are dropping though. She'll probably need platelets (transfusion) on Wednesday. By the end of the day she was very tired and pretty much won't let mommy out of her sight for long (which is a sign she's not feeling well). We have nothing planned today, but to relax. Next labs (blood test) is on Wed.
Well..., we think we know who's stealing our pop-ups. And while I said before it's annoying and I would think a big karma violation (stealing from the family of a sick kid, why else would we be staying at the Ronald McDonald House), in the big scheme of things -- no big deal as long as it was for their sick child. And watching our box of ice cream slowly disappear is more funny than anything.
The Nihei's: Our Story
On April 1, 2008, our 4-year-old daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After her biopsy on April 8th it was determined that she had a bithalamic anaplastic astrocytoma with extension into her brain stem.
In the beginning of March we noticed a personality change in Lauren who normally is a very outgoing and happy-go-lucky kid. She became very clingy and shy. She didn't want to talk on the phone anymore, or play on the slide with the other kids at pre-school. By mid-March, Lauren started complaining about headaches. Her pediatrician thought it might be a sinus infection or that she may need glasses. He put her on antibiotics and we made an eye appointment.
A few days later when she started holding her head funny and her headaches returned we insisted on a CT scan. That's when her pediatrician sent us to the ER at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) for a CT scan, and when our world was turned upside down and our nightmare began...
