The Nihei's: Our Story

On April 1, 2008, our 4-year-old daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After her biopsy on April 8th it was determined that she had a bithalamic anaplastic astrocytoma with extension into her brain stem.

In the beginning of March we noticed a personality change in Lauren who normally is a very outgoing and happy-go-lucky kid. She became very clingy and shy. She didn't want to talk on the phone anymore, or play on the slide with the other kids at pre-school. By mid-March, Lauren started complaining about headaches. Her pediatrician thought it might be a sinus infection or that she may need glasses. He put her on antibiotics and we made an eye appointment.

A few days later when she started holding her head funny and her headaches returned we insisted on a CT scan. That's when her pediatrician sent us to the ER at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) for a CT scan, and when our world was turned upside down and our nightmare began...

We had a very quiet and uneventful 3-day weekend, which nowadays means it was a good weekend. Saturday we spent part of the day at the grand opening for Toys-R-Us and Baby's-R-Us. While it wasn't Disneyland, the kids still have fun taking pictures with Barbie, Strawberry Shortcake, the Care Bears, Arthur, Darth Vader and gang, and Spiderman. At least Lauren did, Marissa was scared of the Star War characters & Spiderman. The rest of the day was spent in the pool. On Sunday, we just relaxed at home and again enjoyed the pool. Monday, Lauren and Marissa went up to their grandparents and hung out with their friends, Hannah and Hailey, where they did a little horse back riding.

Well, we are now on day 5 (of 12) of Lauren's chemo. So far so good. I was going to say, "So far she has shown no effects of it. She hasn't gotten sick (knock of wood), she's been in a great mood with lots of energy, and she has acting really silly, which I don't think is due to the chemo. Yesterday a commercial came on the TV with music, all of a sudden she just broke out into a really silly dance and with a very goofy face. It had us all dying of laughter.", however, tonight after dinner, she seems to be very tired and after taking her chemo she felt like she was going to get sick. Thankfully she didn't. The doctors said that the chemo won't have an immediate affect, that it will take a while for it to accumulate in her system. I think its beginning to take affect.

Other news:

- The other day for the first time, Lauren mention that she looks different than she use to in photos. She told Hilary that her face looks puffy.

- Tonight Lauren's left hand was shaking so much that she spilled half her cup trying to take a drink. I think this got her upset and worried. She wouldn't talk about it but I could tell. Hopefully her shaking was due to the chemo combined with her being tired.
