The Nihei's: Our Story

On April 1, 2008, our 4-year-old daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After her biopsy on April 8th it was determined that she had a bithalamic anaplastic astrocytoma with extension into her brain stem.

In the beginning of March we noticed a personality change in Lauren who normally is a very outgoing and happy-go-lucky kid. She became very clingy and shy. She didn't want to talk on the phone anymore, or play on the slide with the other kids at pre-school. By mid-March, Lauren started complaining about headaches. Her pediatrician thought it might be a sinus infection or that she may need glasses. He put her on antibiotics and we made an eye appointment.

A few days later when she started holding her head funny and her headaches returned we insisted on a CT scan. That's when her pediatrician sent us to the ER at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) for a CT scan, and when our world was turned upside down and our nightmare began...

Lauren is at CHLA today having her bi-weekly blood test. They are currently waiting for the results. Some concerning news: Lauren complained about a headache this morning and again in car on the way to CHLA. The headache was bad enough that she was crying. Obviously we're very-very concerned and scared, but hopefully this is due to the lower dosage of Decadron (steroids) which we lowered from .5 mg to .25 mg last Friday. We have an MRI scheduled Monday, that was scheduled a month ago, which is needed to proceed to Phase II. While we had good news after her last MRI, they are also some the most stressful and scariest times for us. The worst part is waiting for the results and all the "what if?" scenarios that go through your head as you wait for the results. The wait time for this MRI will be especially stressful since Lauren is having headaches and Dr. Finlay will not be in on Monday, and won't be able to review the MRI until Tuesday. Also (I'm not sure if I already posted this), as if we don't have enough things going on in our life, we've schedule Hil's "c" section for baby #3 for Sept. 27th.
