Here we go again, Lauren has another MRI tomorrow morning (her 4th). We have to be at CHLA by 6:30 am. I can't imagine a time when her MRI's will ever become just routine. This MRI is becoming more and more of a concern since Lauren has been experiencing headaches the past few days. At this point we just got to hope and pray that her headaches have nothing to do with the tumor. The doctor did tell us awhile ago that kids do get headaches, but of course that doesn't prevent me from getting that "pit in my stomach" feeling when Lauren tells me her head hurts. At least the most recent headaches have not been bad enough to make her cry like last Thursday (prior to increasing her Decadron). Waiting for the MRI results, which we won't know until at least Tuesday, is going to be tough.
Lauren had a dentist appointment on Friday to make sure her teeth are in good shape and there are no cavities before she begins the next phase of chemo. Good news, no cavities. But the dentist did say that her two bottom front teeth should be loose. Which they were! The dentist could see her new teeth coming up in the x-rays. Lauren was and is so excited. She loves showing people how it wiggles. It sure took me and Hilary by surprise. I'm just glad that it was the dentist that discover her loose teeth and not me. It would have freaked me out. I would have assumed it was due to the chemo. I can't wait to see Lauren without her two front teeth, it will be cute.
We did have a good weekend though. Other than Lauren's occasionally headaches, Grandma and Grandpa Nihei was down from from Northern Cal. visiting. We spent Saturday up at Big Bear Lake, which was nice. Sunday we spent the day at Disney, which very hot. Lauren did really well on both days.
The Nihei's: Our Story
On April 1, 2008, our 4-year-old daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After her biopsy on April 8th it was determined that she had a bithalamic anaplastic astrocytoma with extension into her brain stem.
In the beginning of March we noticed a personality change in Lauren who normally is a very outgoing and happy-go-lucky kid. She became very clingy and shy. She didn't want to talk on the phone anymore, or play on the slide with the other kids at pre-school. By mid-March, Lauren started complaining about headaches. Her pediatrician thought it might be a sinus infection or that she may need glasses. He put her on antibiotics and we made an eye appointment.
A few days later when she started holding her head funny and her headaches returned we insisted on a CT scan. That's when her pediatrician sent us to the ER at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) for a CT scan, and when our world was turned upside down and our nightmare began...
