Lauren's blood test on Monday showed that her blood count was still up, so she didn't need a transfusion or the GCFS shots (which Hilary gives her at home). Today Lauren is going to CHLA for a push of chemo and then won't have another one until next Wed. at which point cycle 3 of 4 will be complete. Today's chemo is the one that makes her hair fall out, while she is still pulling out clumps of hair, surprisingly though, her hair is holding up pretty well. It's just a little thinner, but it still looks good. Also Lauren didn't get sick yesterday, which was the first time since Thursday. I think it was the increase in the Temadore, which she last took on Sunday night that was causing her to be sick. So that was nice. Her energy level is also slowly coming back, but will drop again after today's chemo.
We decreased her Decadron last night. We were at 1/2 mg twice a day. Last night we didn't give her any. She is now at 1/2 mg a day. We can really tell she is almost off the steroids, her appetite has come way down. Last night, she only ate half the food on her dinner plate. Her Monday weigh-in showed that she lost over 2 lbs. since her last appointment on Wed. The increase in appetite is both the bad and good thing about her being on steroids. I figured for the next step when we start the serious chemo, Lauren could use the extra weight.
The Nihei's: Our Story
On April 1, 2008, our 4-year-old daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After her biopsy on April 8th it was determined that she had a bithalamic anaplastic astrocytoma with extension into her brain stem.
In the beginning of March we noticed a personality change in Lauren who normally is a very outgoing and happy-go-lucky kid. She became very clingy and shy. She didn't want to talk on the phone anymore, or play on the slide with the other kids at pre-school. By mid-March, Lauren started complaining about headaches. Her pediatrician thought it might be a sinus infection or that she may need glasses. He put her on antibiotics and we made an eye appointment.
A few days later when she started holding her head funny and her headaches returned we insisted on a CT scan. That's when her pediatrician sent us to the ER at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) for a CT scan, and when our world was turned upside down and our nightmare began...
