The Nihei's: Our Story

On April 1, 2008, our 4-year-old daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After her biopsy on April 8th it was determined that she had a bithalamic anaplastic astrocytoma with extension into her brain stem.

In the beginning of March we noticed a personality change in Lauren who normally is a very outgoing and happy-go-lucky kid. She became very clingy and shy. She didn't want to talk on the phone anymore, or play on the slide with the other kids at pre-school. By mid-March, Lauren started complaining about headaches. Her pediatrician thought it might be a sinus infection or that she may need glasses. He put her on antibiotics and we made an eye appointment.

A few days later when she started holding her head funny and her headaches returned we insisted on a CT scan. That's when her pediatrician sent us to the ER at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) for a CT scan, and when our world was turned upside down and our nightmare began...

Lauren is still in the hospital (CHLA). A blood count above 1,500 is
considered normal, below 1,500 is considered neutropenic, below 500 is
considered super neutropenic. Lauren's blood count this morning was
380, but that is up from 350 the day before, so at least we are going in
the right direction. They told us if her blood counts increase above
500 maybe we'd be able to go home before the weekend.

Over the past few days we noticed a change in some of Lauren's fine
motor skills. Her hands shake uncontrollably when she tries to do things
like put beads on a string or place stickers on something. Also,
her balance seems to be off and her speech is slurred, and she keeps
licking her lips. All of doctors believe it probably due to the Benadryl,
a pre-med that she takes before getting antibiotics and any
transfusions. She has been getting doses of Benadryl 3-4x a day. So they took
her off that last night. We have to monitor her closely today to see
if the above mentioned symptoms persist. If so, she'll be checked out
by a neurologist and maybe a CT scan. It has us all pretty worried
and nervous.

Other things: Grandma Vernor and Marissa got into an accident on the
way to the hospital yesterday. The off ramp to the hospital was
backed up onto the freeway and a car rear-ended them. Not too bad, smashed
tail-light, bashed bumper, and dented trunk. I promised her that
wouldn't make fun of her with comments like "and they talk about old Asian
women drivers."

Also, Lauren has not eaten or drank much over the past three days. The doctors are not too concerned, since she put on so much weight over the past month.
