Lauren had a good weekend. We went to Lauren and Marissa's cousin Kiera's birthday party where they both had a great time. They rented a big bouncer that Lauren really enjoyed. I thought it was good exercise for her to jump around and I didn't have to worry much about her falling down (other than butting heads with another kid). I did notice clumps of Lauren's hair throughout the bouncer. I hope they clean those things before they rent them out to other people. One of the big excitement at the party was when Lauren's 6' 5" 240 lbs. Uncle David and his wife, were fooling around, as in jumping around inside, tipped the bouncer over. Luckily Lauren or Marissa weren't inside, just Kiera who was hanging on the ledge 6 feet above the ground. But, no one got hurt, except maybe Uncle David who got a time out and an earful from all of his sisters.
On the way home I looked in the rearview mirror and I could see Lauren had her eyes closed and was holding her two hands together, whispering to herself. I nudged Hil, who asked her what she was doing? She looked up a little startled, and said, "I was making a wish." We didn't ask what she was wishing for since we knew and it made us sad to think a 4-year-old has to make a wish that her tumor would go away. Before getting home we stopped by Charo Chicken to pick up some dinner. Me and Lauren went inside to order. While we were waiting for our food, I asked her, so what were you wishing for? She said, "I was wishing that next time the bouncer won't tip over and that Kiera won't get hurt."
Sunday was a day of relaxing in the pool with the family. The girls were pretty tired from the party on Saturday. It was nice.
The Nihei's: Our Story
On April 1, 2008, our 4-year-old daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After her biopsy on April 8th it was determined that she had a bithalamic anaplastic astrocytoma with extension into her brain stem.
In the beginning of March we noticed a personality change in Lauren who normally is a very outgoing and happy-go-lucky kid. She became very clingy and shy. She didn't want to talk on the phone anymore, or play on the slide with the other kids at pre-school. By mid-March, Lauren started complaining about headaches. Her pediatrician thought it might be a sinus infection or that she may need glasses. He put her on antibiotics and we made an eye appointment.
A few days later when she started holding her head funny and her headaches returned we insisted on a CT scan. That's when her pediatrician sent us to the ER at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) for a CT scan, and when our world was turned upside down and our nightmare began...
