Not much going on, which is good. Lauren has been in a great mood this entire week. She keeps getting more and more energy as the week goes on. She still can't keep up with Marissa or her cousin Kiera, but she is trying. It's kinda too bad that she starts chemo again on Wed. Last night we've lowered her Dectron (steroid) to 1 1/2 mg a day. This is the lowest its been since she was put on it. It makes us nervous, but it would be nice to get her off steroids, while she doesn't have the 'roid rages as much anymore, she still can't seem to get enough to eat, so she is gaining a lot of weight and it's not helping her constipation. You know it's a problem when she wakes up at 2:30 am and starts telling me what she plans on having for the breakfast in the morning. Her breakfast consisted of a bowl of cereal, followed by a waffle, then toast, some can peaches, and chocolate milk. She asked for Top Ramen, but we finally cut her off.
For this weekend, we are planning on spending most of Saturday in the pool (car temperature yesterday read 111 degrees) and then maybe go to Disneyland early Sunday before it gets too hot, depending on how she is feeling. One last treat before her MRI on Tuesday and the start of 3rd cycle of chemo on Wed. Please give Lauren the strongest prayer or wish you can make between now and Tuesday that her MRI on Tuesday shows positive progress, we need all the help we can get. Thanks.
The Nihei's: Our Story
On April 1, 2008, our 4-year-old daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After her biopsy on April 8th it was determined that she had a bithalamic anaplastic astrocytoma with extension into her brain stem.
In the beginning of March we noticed a personality change in Lauren who normally is a very outgoing and happy-go-lucky kid. She became very clingy and shy. She didn't want to talk on the phone anymore, or play on the slide with the other kids at pre-school. By mid-March, Lauren started complaining about headaches. Her pediatrician thought it might be a sinus infection or that she may need glasses. He put her on antibiotics and we made an eye appointment.
A few days later when she started holding her head funny and her headaches returned we insisted on a CT scan. That's when her pediatrician sent us to the ER at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) for a CT scan, and when our world was turned upside down and our nightmare began...
